The very first all-electric Jaguar is here…please welcome the Jaguar I-Pace. Never a brand to be outdone, Jaguar are right on trend with their blend of electric and SUV – 2 fractions of the automotive industry that are growing fast. Now, for all the nay-sayers out there, the I-Pace is not just the F Pace with batteries – Jaguar have stayed faithful to their original I-Pace concept. Of course, they were pipped to the post by Tesla, who built the first all-electric SUV, the Model X. This could be an advantage though, as Jaguar are now able to learn from Tesla’s early mistakes.
With its pronounced front wheel arches to the rear diffuser, the I-Pace certainly gives off a futuristic feel. Every element of the aerodynamic design allows the car to move cleanly through the air for optimised range and stability. The I-Pace’s distinct on-road presence is enhanced by the slim LED headlights, which feature Jaguars signature double ‘J’ blade graphic. The roof offers an exceptionally smooth look and is available in body-colour, black contrast paint or panoramic glass. The Jaguar I-Pace offers a choice of wheel sizes – pick either 18”, 20” or 22” – each of these would compliment the I-Pace’s revolutionary looks.
Power comes from 2 electric motors, 1 at the front and 1 at the rear of the vehicle, making it 4-wheel-drive. The motors produce a combined 395bhp, which is enough to get the car from 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds. This makes the Jaguar I-Pace significantly faster than the majority of family-friendly cars, electric or otherwise. The I-Pace can complete 298 miles in a single charge, which is better than most electric vehicles, but does fall short of the Model X at 351 miles. The Jaguar I-Pace is in a fairly unique position as it has been tested on the new WLTP cycle – this is intended to better reflect real-world driving conditions. Existing electric models have not had this opportunity, meaning that their statistics aren’t as up to date as the I Pace’s.
In terms of recharging time, batteries can be recharged from 0-80% capacity in approximately 10 hours from a standard wall box. One of the current generation of public rapid chargers would achieve this level of charge in 85 minutes! The Jaguar I-Pace is also compatible with 100kW chargers, which are capable of giving the vehicle an 80% charge in 45 minutes – sadly, few of these will be installed before the end of 2018.
So, shall we take a look inside the future of motoring?
•Plenty of wow factor from the infotainment interface – many elements are the same as the Range Rover Velar.
•Large touchscreen at the centre of the dashboard – this offers access to sat-nav, stereo and phone functions.
•The lower console is also touch sensitive – used to control secondary systems such as air conditioning and driving modes – can be slightly distracting while driving as you have to take eyes off the road.
•Complemented by 2 rotary dials that can be operated by feel – these also change function depending which menu they are on.
•A third display replaces the speedo, rev counter and fuel gauge – this completes the futuristic look – the driver decides exactly what information is in front of them.
•Seamless integration of technology.
•Design is clean and uncluttered with tactile features and sweeping lines.
•Luxury atmosphere – handcrafted touches, rich, solid finishers.
•Crisp, white illumination accentuates details during the night.
•Well-shaped boot with a capacity of 656 litres – excellent space.
•There is space for a charging cable underneath the boot floor, as well as a small storage area at the front of the car.
•Rear seats lie almost flat when folded down.
•Passenger area features a large central storage bin and trays for iPads under the rear seats. •Plenty of leg room for 6 footers.
•Each I-Pace comes with a new EV Navigation System – factors in the way the car is being driven, the topography of planned routes and insights from previous journeys – this helps it calculate the remaining range as accurately as possible.
•Sat-nav can link with a smartphone app designed to make it easier to pre-plan journeys that include walking and public transport as well as driving.
•An app called InControl Remote uses Amazon Alexa software to let you ask questions in plain English.
•InControl Remote also has the ability to warm and cool the battery and interior of the car remotely prior to you getting in the car – meaning that the battery is at its most efficient as soon as you set off, and the interior is always comfortable.
•The energy the system needs is drawn from the mains when the I-Pace is plugged in – this means that it doesn’t rob from its own battery.
Jaguar is set to follow Tesla’s example and will offer wireless updates - this will reduce the need to visit dealers. The I-Pace is able to recognise different drivers using their individual key fobs – the vehicle can learn their preferences and ensure their usual climate control, infotainment and seat settings are ready!
Sounds incredible right? We will be paying the Jaguar I-Pace a visit as soon as it comes in to our local Jaguar dealership, so be sure to keep an eye out for that on our social media channels.
Expected delivery is September 2018 - all vehicles will include the then brand new 68 plate. We are also offering price protection once your order is placed!
